This new monograph, marking the 60th anniversary of David Bomberg's death, continues Ben Uri's series on the 'Whitechapel Boys' — the group of artists of Eastern-European Jewish heritage, all raised in or associated with the East End 'ghetto' in the early decades of the twentieth century, and either the children of immigrants, or immigrants themselves. They went on to study at the Slade School of Art and collectively, and in some cases, individually, made an important contribution to British modernism. David Bomberg and Jacob Epstein brought them together uniquely in the 'Jewish Section' at the Whitechapel Art Gallery's exhibition Twentieth Century Art: A Review of Modern Movements in May 1914. They include Mark Gertler (2002), Jacob Kramer (2003), Alfred Wolmark (2004), Jacob Epstein (2006) and Isaac Rosenberg and his circle (2008). This publication provides an overview of Bomberg's career and is illustrated with more than 100 examples of his work.
