This work was gifted to the Ben Uri Collection in 1991 under the title A Gypsy, although this seems to be a misnomer, given that it differs greatly from Kramer's many portraits of his sister, Sarah, c. 1917, dressed in the gypsy attire made fashionable by Augustus John. Instead, the work is closer to Kramer's portraits of women executed in the late 1930s, including Portrait of Peggy, c. 1937, in which the sitter (although clearly a different model) wears a similar v-neck red dress.
