In July 1960, Alfred Cohen left Paris and moved to London where he produced a series of vigorous, atmospheric paintings of the River Thames and the city. These expressionist landscapes with their animated play of light from the almost bird’s eye view bear semblance to Oskar Kokoschka’s complex and assuredly edited compositions. Cohen showed his series of London paintings in his Aspects of the Thames exhibition in 1961 at the Kaplan Gallery which marked a turning point for him gaining critical acclaim in Britain.
